There can be little doubt that the prospect of the poorer, "undeveloped" countries (…) is very much better than it would have been, had the West not pulled so far ahead. (…) Not only are the countries of the West richer because they have more advanced technological knowledge, but they have more advanced technological knowledge becase they are richer. And the free gift of the knowledge that has cost those in the lead much to achieve enables those who follow to reach the same level at a much smaller cost.

To whom the course is directed: the course is intended for individuals who have no or very little study experience of political philosophy but who are personally interested in (or sensitive to) issues regarding political philosphy in general and the concepts of liberty, democracy and law in particular. The course is intended for individuals who are 16 years old or older.

Abstract: The present course will introduce and discuss the concepts of law, equality before the law, liberty and democracy as viewed by the tradition of classical liberalism, and in particular by Friedrich von Hayek.

< back

Structure of the course: the course will be articulated in lectures, seminars and in the production of a piece of work.

- Lectures (Thursdays):

During the lectures (2 hrs each), the lecturer will synthetically introduce the issue that will be discussed in the following seminar and will distribute the key notes of the lecture (so that it will not be necessary to take notes). The participants will choose a book within a selection that will be offered as a present by Catallaxy Institute: the lecturer will therefore agree with every participant the text from that book that the participant will introduce in one of the seminars.

- Seminars (Tuesdays):

During the seminars, one participant will synthetically introduce the chosen text (15 mins) and a discussion among all the other participants and the lecturer as moderator will follow (45 mins). Each seminar (2 hrs) will include 2 text intorductions followed by the relative discussion.

- Piece of work

After the completion of the course, participants will be asked to produce a piece of work of their own choice. This piece of work should be the expression of the participant's individual talent or ability (e.g. a paper, a poetry, a picture, a video, a script, a painting, etc.) and should be relative to the issues discussed during the course. All works will be published or mentioned in a special section of Catallaxy Institute's website.
